TERRIBLE BLUNDER - 1991
Terrible Blunder
What would you say, no you wouldn't belive me
I'll say it anyway, hear me!
Listen to the city,
can you hear it sleep?
It sounds like a dream, it can be about anything.
I'll take a leaf out of your tree & just get angry at me
I can't express myself, you see?
Well some call it bad luck, I'll call it destiny
when I fall down, you stare at me.
It makes you think, it makes you wonder
Someone must have made a terrible blunder
It makes you think, it makes you wonder.
Well some wake up on silk sheets, others wake up starving
the news today tells me it's raining
But I've got an umbrella that doesn't keep my head dry,
I'll take it anyway, for conformity.
I'd hate to stand out, to fall down in the crowd
say my name wrong, out real loud.
Well count to ten, I'll run and hide,
you won't come and find me, I'm acting just like a child.
It makes you think, it makes you wonder.
Someone must have made a terrible blunder.
It makes you think, it makes you wonder.
Someone must have made a terrible blunder.

DE GRAAF STREET - 1994
De Graaff Street
Get off the bus, walk down the street to the place that you call home
You were born there, but you didn't stay that long.
You got on your bike, and rode the the street
to the place called paradise
With your best friends, on the weekend
well I guess you must have been nearly ten.
And I could never forget their names,
and I see them now and again
on De Graaff Street.
This time you left, you left for real
to the other side of town,
Where it's darker and breakfast
isn't served at quarter to nine.
You could never forget, what's happened before
Nerver forget the long walk home
from the bus stop with your best friends
well I guess you must have been nearly ten.
And I could never forget their names,
and I see them now and again
and De Graaff Street.
Notes:
Written 1994 for my first attempt at a solo album titled "The Canberra Suite", a group of songs all about growing up in Canberra. This one is about the street I grew up in and the friends I had.

NORTHBOURNE - 2004
NORTHBOURNE
Walk down Nothbourne, the avenue
All the way back to the place
You call,
Home.
You've never called it that before
All alone,
On a cold & foggy Canberra morn.
Pass the hotel, where you earn your
pay that you pass, down the drain
At home,
You've never called it that before.
All alone,
On a cold & foggy Canberra morn.
And it seems,
that nothing ever changes here.
Not too quick
like the traffic crawling down the street.
Pass the old flats, lining the road.
Falling down, in need of paint
and more,
than can be held between four walls.
Just the hope,
that Northbourne offers to us all.
It's the road,
that takes us on our way beyond
a small town's
madly, melancholy bonds.
This one written 2004, and set aside for recording in November. A song about the mass exodus of all my friends leaving Canberra to live in Sydney - me included.

The Usual Thing - 1995
The Usual Thing
Well we talked a lot tried to figure it out
but it's really no use I'm no good at economics
And we never seem to make ends meet
although we scrimp a lot you know I only eat beans
How was I supposed to know
that the days go by, before you know
and the money is just one more thing
we can do without live beyond our means
We were stangers when we met, and it didn't mean a thing
And everything that we said, was stuff about the weather
the usual thing.
Well what do you suggest we do?
Don't ask me you know I'm really confused.
If it makes everything okay
let's roll a number and get real spaced
But the high don't last that long,
the more you've done, the less fun
but still I don't want to give up
You've got to have something to take the edge off
Stangers when we met
didn't mean a thing
and everything that we said
was stuff about the weather the usual thing.
How was I to know
way deep down inside
I really don't mean to be mean
but if that's the case I must be blind

Keepsake - 1991
Keepsake
Keepsake, you're losing face
You do what you're told to.
Even if it's not what you want to.
Understand me, taken for granted
pretend that you think that this isn't happening
Only you know your reality.
When will you go?
How will you know?
When will you go?

Days Away -1997
Days Away
I thought I was in the right place but I never really caught that wave.
Paddled in so I could see you again we could go up to that cafe.
It feels so warm tonight I could lie down and fall asleep,
Right here at the beach of all places it's a dream to feel like this.
The breeze comes in and the fire dies down and I fall out of sleep again,
back to a fifty dollar motel and fish and chips for tea what do you say?
If you think you know something about the way I feel today.
Falling over backwards, picking myself up, wishing for those days away.
Stranger things have happened and I know they'll happen again.
Falling over backwards, picking myself up wishing for those days away.

Five Years -1997
Five Years
Remember a time when I had sweet dreams without waking up at quarter to three.
You know I like to write creatively but this is a story I'd never seen
You go along as though nothing's wrong
And you can't turn back it's in your heart
so make a choice and stick to it
You'll always so yes to something else
I never forget a face you see and yours has simply haunted me
So maybe you'll begin to see why I've been waking up at quarter to three
You go along as though nothing's wrong
And you can't turn back it's in your heat
so make a choice and stick to it
You'll always say yest to something else
Making the scene you're just nineteen
Twenty three you know what that means
driving a car for just five years
Just five years.....

For the Weekend - 1999
For The Weekend
Let's go away, for the weekend
I've borrowed a car, I know a place
So what ya doing, on Sunday?
You want to know something, I think you're special.
So take a chance, a punt on us.
The weather's on our side, and we've got the day off.
So if you'd like too, let me take you away
You want to know something, I think you're great
Oh Yeah,
Making up a picnic, check the forecast
It's been a long time since I've done this
You know the winter dragged on right through the spring
But now it's changed, turned for the better
You want to know something, I think you're special.
So keep Sunday free, and spend it with me
It mightn't happen again, you never can tell
But I'll only ask once, let me take you away
Away from the city and into open space....
Oh yeah,
Making up a picnic, check the forecast
Making up a picnic, check the forecast

Bridge Road - 1998
Bridge Rd
It's not too late to call you up?
Didn't think so.
You'd fallen asleep on the couch in front of some TV show.
Waiting to hear from me of all people.
So I say, 'How are you?
I know we talked on Tuesday but it's Wednesday afternoon.'
And you say, 'That's cool,
I'm not up to much, how about you?'
I'm down the stairs, try to catch a cab on Bridge Road
Talk to the driver , he reminds me of someone I think I know.
Than it comes to me, in a moment.
So I say, 'How are you?
I know we talked on Tuesday now it's Wednesday afternnon.'
And he says 'that's cool,
I'm driving my cab while you're seeing your girl.'
I wish that I could stop babbling on
to people I meet whom I don't know.
It just seems to make things easy for me,
to lie to myself makes it all okay.
You make it all okay....

Secret - 2001
Secret
I'll keep your secret, that's something to bet on
Between you and me, the devil and the deep blue sea.
None of you friends will find out
not if it's got anything to do with me.
To them it will be mystery.
I'll keep your secret, that's something to bet on
Between you and me, the devil and the deep blue sea.
None of your friends will find out
not if it's got anyhting to do with me.
To them it will be mystery.
And if they tell you that they know,
well I guess I must have told,
I can't keep a secret.

Song in my Head - 1999
Song in My Head
There's a house on the hill that I can see,
walking with you alongside the beach
We've just woken up, now walking to work
We kiss at the stop and then you turn
and head on your way, I watch as you go
The bus moves off and I just don't know
The right way to feel has the weather took hold
'cause my heart felt warm, but then you go
I tell myself, it's just spring
this sort of thing happens at this time of year
I've got a sad song, in my head,
This is how it goes.
Now I catch the train, to work every day
I don't see the beach, well now and again
That's because I've nowhere to stay
Not since you gave me away.
I moved in with a friend, made a new start
called you up just to let you know
I don't know why, you never called back
you must be down at the beach or seeing a band
I tell myself, it's just spring
This sort of thing happens at this time of year.
I've got a sad song, in my head
This is how it goes.

Just Relax - written 1999
Just Relax
Last lights in town, rush past my window as I leave them behind
The radio's broke, so I sing to myself to fill in the holes
When I reached the beach, I breathed in salt air & I drifted to sleep
And the sound of the sea, floats past my pillow and talks to me...
Just relax. If I hear one more sigh,
Leave it all behind.
I know you've never been this broke. But that's okay,
Let's not mention love
or anything.
Headed back to town, I saw the brown smog before I saw Sydney tower
I had the worst string, of red traffic lights starting at Hornsby
When I reached my place, I switched off the engine and drifted away
Still behind the wheel, a voice in my head starts to talk to me...
Just relax. If I hear one more sigh,
Leave it all behind.
I know you've never been this broke, but that's okay
Let's not mention love....
or anything.
